The measured – but stinging – criticism of Chelsea’s project from Marc Cucurella come at a crucial time to make an impact.

On the back of four defeats in a row, and following Enzo Fernandez’s open flirtation with potentially leaving the club, it’s another PR blow to the Blues, in the middle of an international break where it will have greater impact.

Cucurella times his criticism to perfection

It’s a vital moment for Cucurella to play his cards too: as Liam Twomey points out in his follow up piece for the Athletic, the interview comes as we approach the summer where “Cucurella will have two years remaining on his contract this summer, the point at which Chelsea are typically motivated to either extend or sell.”

It already looked more than possibly Cucurella would leave if a big bid came in. He’s now made it pretty clear he’d think twice about renewing his deal, given he’s about to enter his prime and will want to be competing for the top trophies.

With Enzo Fernandez openly flirting with the idea of an exit and Cole Palmer looked more disgruntled than ever, this whole project feels like it’s in critical condition even before the failure to qualify for the Champions League is confirmed.

In other news…

Cucurella also criticised the decision to sack Enzo Maresca earlier this season.
