The Rio de Janeiro sports court TJD-RJ has suspended Nova Iguaçu captain Sidão and Portuguesa defender Luís Gustavo for 365 days in a manipulation case from this year's Carioca.
According to Globo.com, both were punished under Article 243, which covers deliberately acting to the detriment of one’s team, and fined R$ 1,000 each. Appeals remain open to the court’s Pleno.
The same judgment fined Portuguesa president Marcelo Gonçalves R$ 5,000 under Article 220-A for obstruction, omission or non-cooperation with sporting justice. Supervisor Muniz was also fined R$ 5,000.
The investigation centred on Portuguesa 1-0 Nova Iguaçu on 7 February at the Luso-Brasileiro. The CBF’s integrity unit and the Rio federation were alerted to unusually high linked bets on yellows for both players.
Wagers totalled R$ 253,000, with 80% on that market. Both cautions arrived, Sidão on 35 minutes of the first half and Luís Gustavo three minutes into the second.
On learning of the probe, Portuguesa removed Luís Gustavo and issued a statement stressing transparency and ethics. Nova Iguaçu kept Sidão to the end of the competition, after which he joined a Kings League team.
The case is one of 15 inquiries under way at Decon into possible crimes in Rio football, spanning 2023 to 2025 lower divisions. Another features audio of a referee allegedly confessing, though he denied involvement, and the case of Willian Rogatto, who admitted taking part.
