Todd Cantwell is facing an uncertain future at Blackburn Rovers heading into the summer window.
Blackburn Rovers are gearing up for a huge summer, although the immediate concern is trying to win their fight to stay in the Championship.
However, no matter what division Rovers are in, the hierarchy is going to have to make some huge decisions, not least appointing a permanent head coach, as Michael O’Neill has only signed a short-term contract at Ewood Park.
As well as that, they will need a squad overhaul, as it’s clear the group is lacking in certain departments, and, again, whether they’re relegated or not, players will move on this summer.

Todd Cantwell is one of those who could depart, as there has been plenty of speculation surrounding his future for a few months now.
The attacking midfielder joined the club in the summer of 2024, and he has been a reliable performer for the club, even if this campaign has been disrupted by injuries.
Nevertheless, Cantwell is back fit now, and O’Neill will expect him to be a key figure in their bid to stay in the Championship over the next few months.
Of course, that will be Cantwell’s only concern right now, but he will address his future in the summer, and here we look at three crucial topics that could determine where he is playing next season…

The main reason for the speculation around Cantwell has been his contract situation.
He agreed a deal with Rovers that runs until the summer of 2027, so the club know they are in an awkward position with Cantwell.
It has been stated that they have tried to agree fresh terms with the ex-Norwich man, but so far he has refused to put pen to paper.
That means Blackburn know his value is only going to decrease the longer he stays, and if they don’t sell him in the summer, he could walk away for a small fee in January, or on a free transfer in the summer of 2027.
Obviously, that is not what Rovers want, so you get the feeling that if they can’t secure Cantwell on a long-term deal, they will be open to cashing in for a reasonable fee in the next window.

It’s important to state that these figures are only estimates, but Capology claims that Cantwell is on £30,000 a week at Blackburn, which makes him the highest earner at Ewood Park.
In truth, it would be no surprise if he was the highest earner, as he joined from Rangers, where he was likely to be on a significant salary, and he is one of few Rovers players who have played in the Premier League in the past.
Clearly, this would be a major problem for Blackburn if they were relegated, as they would need to reduce the wage bill, meaning an exit for Cantwell would seem inevitable.
Yet, either way, Blackburn are going to have a big decision to make. Are they prepared to improve Cantwell’s wages? Is it beyond their limit right now?
You wouldn’t expect any major development until the club knows which league they will be playing in next season, but his wages are likely to be a stumbling block in any new deal.

Following on from that, it has been reported that Cantwell has already turned down an offer to stay at the club, which is a concern for Rovers.
As explained above, discussions will be going on in the background with representatives of the player, but there will be no rush to make a decision.
From Rovers’ perspective, you would imagine that letting Cantwell run down his contract is not an option, so if no contract is signed, they will be open to offers.
If Cantwell has turned down a new contract, it indicates he is open to leaving, so it’s not going to be a shock to many if the 28-year-old is playing his final months in a blue-and-white shirt.
