According to Sunderland Echo, Tom Burwell has issued a rallying message to Sunderland supporters after the Black Cats secured Europa League football for the first time in 53 years.
Régis Le Bris’ side finished seventh after a 2-1 final-day win over Club World Cup champions Chelsea at the Stadium of Light, with other results also falling their way. It crowns a four-year climb from League One to Europe.
The feat arrived exactly 12 months after promotion at Wembley, achieved in a dramatic play-off final win over Sheffield United. The final whistle brought emotional scenes as players, staff, supporters and members of the ownership group celebrated.
Burwell hailed an unforgettable week and season, saluted a 49,000 crowd and said fans roared Sunderland to a second win over Chelsea and into Europe. He said there were too many heroes to list across pitch, stands and worldwide, and that the club is marching on Europe.
Le Bris said the qualification shows anything is possible in football, while urging humility as a heavier schedule awaits next season. He said the club’s structure provides a platform to keep progressing and, as after promotion, he would not set firm limits or targets.
