Tom Burwell, Sunderland’s interim CEO, said the ownership remain committed to the long-term plan and played down any imminent sale activity. He added he is in constant dialogue with chairman Kyril Louis-Dreyfus.

Footbiz revealed earlier this year that the owners had hired US investment bank Moelis and that potential investors had been alerted to the club’s possible availability.

Burwell said interest was natural given the Premier League’s global pull and the scarcity of a league with only 20 clubs. He stressed there is close alignment with the ownership on the club’s next phase.

He pointed to year two of a capital expenditure investment programme at the stadium and academy as evidence of long-term intent. He also acknowledged approaches to the ownership, some credible and some not, but reiterated the focus on progression.

After that initial report, the ownership group issued a statement restating full commitment, noting a season of significant progress and that the club is aggressively planning for its second Premier League campaign.
