Interim CEO Tom Burwell has sketched Sunderland’s next steps, spanning structure, stadium options, revenue growth and supporter engagement.

According to Sunderland Echo, he wants business and football operations integrated. The next CEO will run day-to-day across the club to enable a high-calibre hire.

Stadium of Light expansion is under discussion, yet costs and a modest four or five-figure seat gain complicate the case. Hospitality is a clear focus, with box demand high and premium seating lagging newer venues.

Sunderland forecast finishing 13th or 14th for revenue this season, about 200 million, with uncertainty over whether the imminent women’s team sale is counted. The new SCR rules will make a top 6 push very difficult, but could give them an edge over clubs around them if commercial income grows.

There is no unlimited transfer pot. Prudence is expected and some departures are inevitable, though revenues around 200 million could soften the need for frequent major sales if recruitment is broadly right.

Despite the gambling ban, an improved front-of-shirt sponsor is expected after last May’s cut-price deal, with talks under way for further partners. A membership programme is planned to grow national and international income.

The ambition is to bed into the Premier League’s top 10, building on last summer’s hugely ambitious window. Burwell emphasised maintaining the bond with fans after renewal frustrations, warning against moving too fast or losing that connection.
