The 24-year-old joined the Potters in the summer of 2023, and whilst it has been a tough period for the club over the past two years, he has been a popular figure, and he particularly impressed on the pitch in the second half of the previous campaign.

Therefore, news of his departure to the German outfit didn’t go down well, although the funds brought in could give Mark Robins some more room to manoeuvre in the transfer market.

After his exit was announced, Burger took to Instagram to send an emotional message to the Stoke fans, where he reacted to his time in Staffordshire, and he thanked the supporters for the way they backed him.

And, among those to respond to the comments were Cannon and Manhoef, who have spent time with the ex-Netherlands U21 international at the Bet365 stadium.

Cannon, who is currently at Sheffield United, was with Stoke on loan, and he simply stated ‘all the best mate’. Meanwhile, Manhoef, who is still with the Potters, commented ‘my buddy’ and a love heart emoji to the midfielder, who he has shared the dressing room with.

Wouter Burger will be missed at Stoke City

From the outside, it appears Burger was very popular with both his teammates and the fans, and his message shows that he enjoyed his time in England, and he embraced what Stoke are all about.

So, those factors, along with his ability on the pitch, mean he is going to be hard to replace for Stoke.

Burger looked to be playing very well under Robins, and, in an ideal world, the ex-Coventry man would be building around a player like the former Basel man moving forward.

But the reality is that Stoke needed to trade this summer, and the chance to move to a Bundesliga club was always going to appeal to the player, who will now get to test himself in a very good league.
