Sheffield United have set their asking price for Irish striker Tom Cannon with Preston North End interested

Sheffield United are remaining steadfast in their approach to Tom Cannon's situation heading into the final week of the transfer window, despite Preston North End's interest.

According to Alan Nixon via Patreon, Sheffield United are demanding around £7 million plus extras for Irish striker Cannon, with Preston having registered an interest in the striker in recent weeks.

That fee is roughly the same as what the Blades paid for the 23-year-old in January 2025 from Leicester City, with Chris Wilder not prepared to make a loss on him just yet.

Cannon, 23, has struggled to hit the heights he has previously shown to be capable of in the Championship for Sheffield United following his £10 million move to Bramall Lane over 18 months ago.

The Everton academy graduate joined Leicester City in the summer of 2023 after an excellent loan spell with Preston North End in the second tier, scoring eight in 20 league games for the Lilywhites, but struggled for minutes at the King Power Stadium.

Another positive loan spell in the Championship during the first half of the 2024/25 campaign with Stoke City followed, scoring nine in 22 league games, leading to his subsequent switch to Sheffield United, where he has managed just seven goals in 56 appearances across all competitions.

Cannon was left on the bench for the Blades' goalless draw away to Swansea City on Saturday, as Nixon has previously reported Preston's interest in the Irish international.

Nixon states that Sheffield United are looking for their money back in the event of any sale of Cannon in the next week, with The Star having previously reported on the club's intentions of keeping the 23-year-old around beyond the summer.

Cannon excelled during his loan spell at Deepdale during the second half of the 2022/23 campaign, and left his mark on the Lancashire club.

The Lilywhites have reportedly agreed a deal to part ways with controversial striker Milutin Osmajic this summer, with Italian side Genoa interested, leaving Paul Heckingbottom's side short up top.

Nixon has reported Preston's interest in Cannon, whilst the club are also considering moves for Southampton's Cameron Archer and Stockport County's Adama Sidebeh.

Football League World's Preston fan pundit, Darren Watson, has previously shared their thoughts over a potential move for Cannon, saying a move for the 23-year-old would 'excite' them.

Although Cannon has not had the greatest of stints in South Yorkshire, his record in the Championship remains admirable, and still only 23, there is more than enough time to find form again.

That £7 million plus extras fee that Sheffield United are requesting for Cannon will almost certainly put Preston off making any serious move for the Irishman, with the Lilywhites needing to break their record fee paid for a player once again after Alfie Devine earlier this summer.

A deal at this stage seems unlikely, though this is one to keep an eye on entering the final week of the summer window.

However, this Sheffield United fan appears not to share the same opinion, asking the question of whether it is April Fools' Day for that sort of fee.

Like the previous Blades fan, this supporter also believes that price for Cannon is excessive and that he isn't worth even half of that touted amount.

Not all Sheffield United supporters have lost hope in Cannon, with this fan believing the Irishman should be kept beyond the window, and urging that he will come good if utilised correctly.
