Blues salvaged a late draw at The Hawthorns in a fairly even Championship contest

Birmingham City owner, Tom Wagner, was amongst those on social media to issue an immediate verdict on the 1-1 draw against local rivals, West Bromwich Albion on Wednesday night.

Blues entered the West Midlands derby in a much improved run of recent form, especially after continuing a remarkable feat of scoring four times at St. Andrew's @ Knighthead Park for the third successive home outing against Norwich City on Saturday afternoon.

As such, many believed that Chris Davies' side would edge this particular contest against a Baggies outfit who surrendered a 2-0 lead against league leaders Coventry City over the weekend, with The Hawthorns crowd continuing to grow restless against Ryan Mason for a lack of recent positive results.

It proved to be a fairly even contest in B71, though, with West Brom enjoying much more control and possession in the opening exchanges, and they were rewarded after 12 minutes when a George Campbell long-throw was only headed clear into the path of Alex Mowatt, with the seasoned Championship campaigner hitting a sweet strike which deflected off the boots of Phil Neumman and past James Beadle into the bottom corner.

Birmingham eventually grew into the game but struggled to test Baggies goalkeeper, Josh Griffiths, for the best part of an hour, before the pendulum swung in favour of Davies' men in the encounter's final stretch.

Following a string of gilt-edged chances in front of the 2,538 travelling supporters, Ducksch continued his fine run of form since beginning a maiden run of starts in royal blue by glancing home Tommy Doyle's pinpoint free-kick delivery past the outstretched Griffiths with 12 minutes remaining.

Ultimately, a third away success of the campaign proved elusive, but it was certainly viewed as another step in the right direction by many, including the aforementioned Wagner.

As previously mentioned, it was a fairly even and well contested battle between the two local rivals, as is so often the case when they face off at either The Hawthorns or St. Andrew's.

The post-game statistics certainly back up such feelings - which were held by many - with Blues' 14 overall attempts being one more than West Brom were able to muster, although the two sides shared four attempts on target apiece, as well as the points.

It has been an extremely eventful week for all associated with Blues. Plans for their upcoming 62,000-seater 'Powerhouse' stadium were unveiled last Thursday, before 150 years of history was officially marked in their 4-1 success over Norwich on Saturday.

Since the start of November, it has also been a largely positive month in terms of the number of points accrued for Davies' side, having taken 10 points from a possible 15 against Portsmouth, Millwall, Middlesbrough, Norwich and the Baggies.

Unsurprisingly, the club's extremely vocal and passionate owner, Wagner, was one of the first to issue a message of support towards his players, Davies and the travelling contingent who made the short venture across to B71, with an Instagram story from the American reading: "A strong fight."

Birmingham City will hope to address away form in the coming weeks

Whilst a point in the circumstances was certainly respected by Davies and the vast majority of supporters, it is glaringly obvious that Blues will hope to address their away form over the coming weeks and months.

Since returning to the Championship, the former Tottenham Hotspur assistant has only seen his side emerge victorious twice on the road against Blackburn Rovers and Preston North End, as well as being involved in two stalemates against Wrexham and the Baggies - form which sees them rank 21st in the division when it comes to being away from St. Andrew's

A current position of ninth after 17 games, sitting just two points outside the play-offs, certainly gives Birmingham a platform to build on within the relentless festive and New Year period.

Davies' men are next in action against Watford at St. Andrew's in front of the Sky Sports cameras on Monday night, as they go in search of a fourth successive home league victory for the first time since March 29th.
