Tommy Doyle looks set to head back to Wolves this summer, with his Birmingham City loan no longer pointing towards a permanent outcome.
The Birmingham Mail has described a return as inevitable, and reports that Wolves have made checks, with assistant head coach Paul Trollope watching his last start against Middlesbrough earlier this month.
Doyle joined Blues on loan at the start of the season, and Birmingham agreed a clause to buy him if promoted. Sitting 11th on 53 points, 10 off the play-offs with seven to play, that now appears unlikely.
His role has waned too, with only one start in Birmingham’s last 10 league games.
Wolves are practically certain to be playing Championship football next season, despite a recent upturn in the Premier League. Having Doyle available could therefore be valuable.
The midfielder has 86 Championship appearances across Cardiff City, Sheffield United and Birmingham, close to 100 overall. With an expected summer exodus, and Joao Gomes and Andre likely to go first, his return could aid a rebuild and save money.
