Tonda Eckert hailed Saturday's comeback against Derby County at St Mary's as Southampton's standout display of the week, citing the consistency that underpinned the win.
According to Sainstmarching.com, the manager's verdict raised eyebrows given a memorable week that included knocking Premier League leaders Arsenal out of the FA Cup and a 5-1 victory over play-off rivals Wrexham at the Racecourse Ground.
Eckert argued his side were clearly on top in the first half yet failed to finish attacks, and after falling behind they resisted changing tack. Keeping their structure and discipline, Southampton levelled through a moment of Scienza quality, then pressed on to secure the points.
Sticking to the plan, Eckert withdrew two key players, with Tom Fellows replaced by Kury Matsuki during the second half. Fellows had tormented County's left side without the final ball, and the coach maintained his rotation policy, with 60 minutes often the limit for attackers and midfielders.
The head coach said the squad will have a day off before he prepares for Tuesday's rearranged match against Blackburn Rovers. Another win could move Southampton up to fourth, yet he stressed they have not achieved anything and that humility, not praise, must set the tone.
