Tony Mowbray has been confirmed for a second spell in charge of Blackburn Rovers, with the appointment announced on Friday. A former Sunderland coach could join his staff. According to Sunderland Echo, Mike Dodds is being considered for a role at Ewood Park.

Mowbray, 62, previously spent five years with Rovers after arriving in February 2017, then took over at Sunderland following Alex Neil’s move to Stoke City in August 2022. He led the Black Cats to the Championship play-offs, where they lost to Luton Town in the semi-finals.

He left Sunderland in early December 2023 and now returns to the dugout after just over a year.

Mowbray said the return feels like finishing unfinished business, stressing he has the energy for the job and wants to make supporters proud. He added that even his wife welcomed the chance, joking that walking the dog had been the highlight of his days away.

The report said Mowbray is keen to reunite with Dodds, who is currently assistant manager at Oxford United after serving as a first-team coach and interim boss at Sunderland. In December 2023, Dodds praised Mowbray’s standards, integrity and the foundations he left on Wearside.
