Rotherham United owner Tony Stewart has been told to sell the Millers, who have been relegated to League Two

Rotherham United are anticipating a summer of change both on and off the field following their relegation from League One to League Two.

The Millers have often bounced between the Championship and the third tier in recent years, but they will be competing in the fourth tier next term.

Current boss Lee Clark is only under contract at the New York Stadium until the end of the campaign, and the South Yorkshire outfit may look to appoint another manager.

Rotherham have nothing but pride left to play for in the closing stages of the season, and must soon assemble a squad that can win promotion from League Two.

Stewart Family told to sell Rotherham United amid news of overseas consortium interest

The Millers faced Reading on Saturday, which marked their final home game of a disappointing campaign.

And as reported by the Rotherham Advertiser, a Swiss consortium - who may choose to invest in the League Two-bound side - were set to attend the fixture against Royals.

The Advertiser's report added that Millers chairman, Tony Stewart, is 'more amenable to a sale' than at any previous point in his tenure - he's still very much in control of the club despite transferring his shares in the club to his son Patrick earlier in the year.

Amid these new developments, Football League World asked our Rotherham fan pundit, Tom Eyre, if now was the right time for the Stewart family to sell the South Yorkshire club.

Eyre told FLW: "I think without a doubt it's the right time for the Stewart family to give up the reins of Rotherham United. I think a plan is in place. Tony's given the reins already to his son, whilst remaining chairman.

"It's the perfect time. Tony's unfortunately taken us back to where he found us. We've had some really good years under him. But as you look to progress in this business and this industry, you can see that Tony Stewart isn't really the man to take Rotherham forward.

"I believe that, as a result, you've got to really consider the Swiss consortium. Obviously, there's a lot of ifs, buts and maybes with owners nowadays.

"They're not always what they appear to be on paper, but we're just going to have to hope that these guys have got a really good plan to take Rotherham United forward, and improve both the club and the community."

Rotherham United's next owners have a big task

As summarised by Eyre, the Stewart family have taken Rotherham from League Two to the Championship, and now back to the fourth tier.

Having seen their side compete in the second tier as recently as 2024, the Millers faithful will want to see their club return to League One as swiftly as possible, with an ultimate goal of reaching the Championship once again in mind.

Therefore, if the Swiss consortium who were said to be attending Saturday's clash with Reading complete a takeover at the New York Stadium, they will have a major task on their hands.

Regardless of takeover matters, the South Yorkshire outfit must make a swift decision on Clark's future, so that they can properly begin planning for next season.
