Manuel Neuer made a strong start to the season, but recently the mistakes have been piling up. Now the critical voices surrounding the FC Bayern captain are increasing.

In the last three games, the record champions have conceded seven goals – five of them from set-pieces. Particularly striking: Neuer was directly involved in at least four of these goals. The 39-year-old did not make a confident impression at several moments.

The 3-1 defeat against Arsenal intensified the discussion. Neuer was already late to the action at 0-1 after a corner. Michael Ballack was critical of the scene: „He wants to block the player himself, gets out of rhythm and loses his timing.“ For the ex-Bayern player, the situation was clear: „For me, too little for a foul, a normal duel, not worthy of punishment.“

Neuer saw the scene a little differently: „The opponent naturally throws me off balance, that’s clear. Then I’m in a different position than I would have liked and can’t get to the front like that.“

On the third goal conceded against Arsenal, Neuer rushed far out of his goal to prevent an impending one-on-one situation against Martinelli – but the Brazilian cleverly put the ball past him and scored. Ballack was even clearer: „If he goes for the ball, he has to have it, he knows that himself. He decided to take the risk – and is being punished.“

The captain explained his decision with the score: „It was already clear to me that there would be a one-on-one situation and a great chance […] The touch was simply decisive and then I can’t get there, and I knew that I was taking a big risk.“

Max Eberl also commented on the scene after the final whistle: „If he stops on the line, he runs one on one on him and he might still have a chance. He decided to make the run and Martinelli apparently still saw him in the corner of his eye.“

Fans‘ voices grow louder: „Neuer’s era is over“

Some critical voices were also raised about Neuer on X. One user wrote: „It’s time to get a new goalkeeper. Neuer’s era is over, unfortunately.“ Another commented: „Manu’s time is up. He also made a good save today. But unfortunately, mistakes like that have been happening to him far too often recently. You can’t make nice anymore. You should seriously build up Urbig now and give Manu a proper send-off at the end of the season.“

Another user even called for short-term consequences: „Neuer and Upa on the bench for a few games please, how can you give the opposition two goals like that…“
