FC Bayern sent out a strong signal in the Champions League with their 2:1 win at Real Madrid – not only convincing in sporting terms, but also largely convincing tactically. Coach Vincent Kompany in particular received a lot of praise from his own ranks after the game. But not all observers share this assessment unreservedly
CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen found clear words at the traditional post-match banquet and demonstratively backed the Belgian: „Vincent, we all owe you a huge debt of gratitude. You prepared the team perfectly for the opponent, for the game and for this stadium. You put in a fantastic performance. It was a great team performance.“
These words underline the status Kompany now enjoys at FC Bayern. The coach has established himself at the highest level and has led Munich through a strong season so far
Sky pundit Dietmar Hamann was also generally impressed by the record champions‘ performance. In his column, he praised several players in particular who had contributed significantly to the success: „In addition to Neuer, Aleksandar Pavlovic also played an outstanding game in Madrid, especially with his ball recovery before the 2-0, as did Josip Stanisic, who was able to keep Vinicius in check for the most part. In my opinion, the two Bayern home-grown players, together with Olise, must be positively highlighted once again from the really good team performance.“
The statements show that the team’s overall performance was perceived as very strong – especially the role of young players and the defensive stability against Real Madrid’s attacking stars

Despite the praise, Hamann also found points of criticism – especially in the Bayern coach’s substitution decisions, specifically the substitutions of Jamal Musiala and Alphonso Davies in the 69th minute
„I’m somewhat critical of Kompany’s decision to bring on Musiala and Davies in the 69th minute. They hadn’t played for a long time and I felt it was too risky to bring them on when Bellingham was taking control of the game at the other end,“ explained Hamann
The former international would have preferred other solutions in this phase: „They still got through, but if you want to calm the game down, I would have preferred to bring on a Goretzka, who has a physical presence and closes down a lot of spaces, and a Bischof, who is on the upswing after his goals. I think these two would have been a better fit in these situations.“
The bottom line is that FC Bayern have impressed in sporting terms and have established an excellent starting position. However, the discussion surrounding Kompany’s transfer shows that even with an away win at the Bernabéu, there is still room for different assessments – a sign of how high the record champions‘ standards are.
