Torino are the early frontrunners to sign Matteo Darmian when his Inter Milan contract expires this summer, with the Granata having already made a verbal approach to the defender’s entourage as they look to capitalise on one of Serie A’s most experienced free agents.
According to transfer expert Matteo Moretto, via L’Interista, Darmian will not be renewing his deal with Inter after six years at the club.
Therefore bringing to an end a lengthy and largely successful spell.
One that saw the versatile defender become a trusted and dependable figure under both Simone Inzaghi and Cristian Chivu.
“There is news on Darmian, whose contract is expiring,” Moretto confirmed. “He will not renew with Inter and there will be a revolution in the Nerazzurri defensive department.”
Indeed, multiple clubs have already begun making enquiries about the former Manchester United full-back.
However, one club has moved fastest and most decisively. “One club above all is already informing itself, Torino, who have already put forward a verbal proposal to his entourage,” Moretto said.
Therefore, a return to the Granata appears to be the most likely outcome.
For Inter, Darmian’s departure is one of several defensive exits expected this summer.
Acerbi and De Vrij also leave when their contracts expire.
Therefore leaving Cristian Chivu and sporting director Piero Ausilio with significant work to do.
Especially in rebuilding the backline ahead of next season.
Darmian’s reliability and positional versatility, capable of playing on either flank or as part of a back three, will be difficult to replace.
Indeed, even if the club have already begun identifying his successors.
