Toronto FC has officially brought Raheem Edwards back into the fold after claiming the veteran defender off waivers from Red Bull New York. General Manager Jason Hernandez expressed enthusiasm about the homecoming, noting that the Mississauga native embodies the competitive spirit local fans expect and will provide valuable depth to the club's defensive lineup.

Hernandez added, ""As a GTA native, Raheem will represent our club with the fire and competitiveness that our supporters expect. He will bolster our defensive personnel and push the demands within the group every day."

Edwards, now 30 years old and entering his tenth MLS season, originally began his professional journey with the Toronto FC Academy before signing his first senior contract in 2017. He was a contributing member of the legendary 2017 squad that achieved Major League Soccer’s only domestic treble, winning the MLS Cup, the Supporters’ Shield, and the Canadian Championship in a single campaign. Across his initial two-year stint with the Reds, he tallied eight assists in 27 matches.

The veteran defender returns to Toronto following a 2025 season with Red Bull New York, where he featured in 29 matches across various competitions. His extensive career has included stints with several other MLS franchises, including CF Montréal, both Los Angeles clubs, Minnesota United, and the Chicago Fire, accumulating 178 regular-season appearances. Internationally, Edwards has also represented the Canadian Men’s National Team on five occasions since making his debut in 2017.

While Edwards may not feature in the starting eleven, he is a much needed depth piece. While Toronto's backline has improved with the signings of Walker Zimmerman and Matheus Pereira, the team still needs reliable bench players for the grind of the MLS regular season. Additionally, he will be able to offer some opportunity to mentor younger players like Lazar Stefanovic and Adam Pearlman that will spilt time between TFC II and the senior club.
