Tottenham’s fragile Premier League survival bid suffered another painful setback as Brighton struck deep into stoppage time to secure a dramatic 2-2 draw in north London. With tension gripping the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, it was Georginio Rutter who delivered the decisive moment, scoring in the 95th minute to deny Spurs a vital win.
For much of the evening, Tottenham appeared set to end a troubling run that has now stretched to 15 league matches without victory. When Xavi Simons curled home with 13 minutes remaining, hope surged through the stands. Instead, Brighton responded with composure and conviction, underlining their growing credentials as contenders for European qualification.
Tottenham’s opener came against the run of Brighton’s early dominance. Pedro Porro headed in from Simons’ cross, lifting the mood after a tense opening period in which Brighton had threatened through Danny Welbeck and Kaoru Mitoma.
Mitoma, introduced early due to injury, levelled matters in first-half stoppage time with a superb volley into the top corner, a goal that shifted the emotional balance of the game. Spurs regained control in the second half, with Simons producing a moment of quality after Lucas Bergvall’s pressing forced an error high up the pitch.
Yet football has a way of rewarding persistence. Brighton, patient throughout, found their moment late on. Rutter’s equaliser, arriving with five minutes of added time played, silenced the home crowd and reinforced Tottenham’s precarious position.
The implications for Tottenham are stark. With just five games remaining, they sit one point from safety, their fate increasingly uncertain. Results elsewhere could yet deepen their concerns, with rivals still to play and Leeds United having already edged further clear.
Despite the disappointment, there were glimpses of encouragement. The return of Rodrigo Bentancur and James Maddison offered a lift, while the attacking intent, particularly through Simons, suggested a team still capable of competing.
Roberto De Zerbi acknowledged the challenge ahead, stating, “We need to find a solution to win games”. His side showed resilience, but resilience alone may not be enough as the season reaches its decisive phase.
Brighton, by contrast, continue to gather momentum. Fabian Hurzeler’s side, buoyed by five wins in their previous six matches, demonstrated both patience and belief. Even when chances were limited, they remained composed, trusting their approach.
Welbeck came close on multiple occasions, while late pressure eventually told. The equaliser keeps Brighton firmly in the race for European places, with a crucial fixture against Chelsea looming.
As Hurzeler reflected, “We know we can play better”, a warning that this Brighton side still has another level to reach.
For Tottenham, time is slipping away. For Brighton, opportunity continues to grow.
