Tottenham agree €40m deal with Atletico Madrid for Cristian Romero | OneFootball

Tottenham Hotspur are set to part ways with Cristian Romero after agreeing a €40 million package with Atletico Madrid, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Spurs have sold the 28-year-old, who has been angling for a move away from North London for some time now.

The Argentine international (58 caps) had admirers from far and wide, but he has joined the Spanish giants.

Romero leaves Tottenham after making 156 appearances and scoring 13 goals since joining permanently in 2022, following an initial loan spell.

He also played a key role as Tottenham won the Europa League at the end of the 2024/25 campaign.

Spurs were ready for his departure. The arrivals of Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi have significantly strengthened their centre-back options.

Tottenham need the funds further forward

The priority now should be at the other end of the pitch.

Tottenham need to turn the Romero windfall into at least one marquee attacking signing, particularly a winger capable of providing genuine match-winning quality in the final third.

Spurs have lacked consistent individual brilliance in wide areas.

They need to add a player who can beat defenders, create chances and produce goals could transform their attacking threat.

A new centre-forward should also be high on the agenda.

While Spurs have attacking options, they need a reliable focal point capable of delivering goals across an entire Premier League campaign.

Dominic Solanke struggles with injuries. The same goes for Richarlison who isn’t especially prolific.

Tottenham are reportedly chasing Folarin Balogun following an excellent World Cup campaign.

They will be hoping that he can stay fit for the entire campaign. On his day, he is a terrific striker, but he has dealt with niggling injuries.

Spurs continue to pursue Savinho, but his goal returns in the English top flight have many questioning whether he can truly make a difference.
