Key Spurs star moves one crucial step closer to long-awaited return to action
Dominic Solanke appears to have returned to team training in a major boost for Tottenham heading into 2026.
The England striker has not featured for Spurs since late August due to a persistent ankle injury that eventually required surgery in September.
No timeframe was set for Solanke’s return to first-team action and Tottenham head coach Thomas Frank has not provided many updates over recent weeks, though insisted earlier this month that there had been no fresh setback after the former Bournemouth star was replaced by Mathys Tel in the club’s squad for the remainder of the Champions League league phase.
It remained unclear when Solanke might be in a position to play again, but he now appears to have taken a crucial step forward.
The 28-year-old uploaded footage of himself taking part in team training to his official Instagram Stories on Tuesday evening, along with the playful caption: “Still alive.”
In the clip, Solanke can be seen running, passing and shooting during a routine drill at Hotspur Way, with no obvious limitations.
While the latest London derby away at Frank’s former club Brentford on New Year’s Day will surely come too soon for Solanke, his involvement in training will raise hope that he will be in a position to play again sooner rather than later.
Spurs face a hectic January schedule that also includes top-flight meetings with Sunderland, Bournemouth, West Ham and Burnley, plus Champions League games against Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt, and an FA Cup visit from Aston Villa.
Frank said earlier on Tuesday that Lucas Bergvall should be fit to face Brentford after he was forced off in Sunday’s 1-0 win at Crystal Palace, while Destiny Udogie is also getting closer to returning from a hamstring injury.
Xavi Simons is still suspended, though captain Cristian Romero is back from his own ban as he awaits the result of a charge from the Football Association (FA) following his late sending off in the home loss to Liverpool, with a decision on that expected in early January.
Spurs remain without Solanke’s fellow long-term injury absentees Dejan Kulusevski and James Maddison, while midfielders Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma are both currently away at the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
