Spurs remain in relegation struggle after derby defeat at Chelsea

Tottenham’s relegation worries will persist into the final day of the Premier League season after they failed to beat Chelsea on Tuesday night.

It was a largely grim night for Spurs as they suffered yet another loss at Stamford Bridge, though there was at least some positive news on the team news front as Guglielmo Vicario appeared in the matchday squad.

He did not start, however, with the in-form Antonin Kinsky preferred between the sticks.

There was a notable absence from the team-sheet too as Dominic Solanke failed to make the bus to southwest London, but Roberto De Zerbi will hope to have him back in the fold for next week’s crunch relegation decider against Everton.

Dominic Solanke

It is hoped that Dominic Solanke can play again this season despite suffering a new hamstring injury against Wolves, which saw him hooked before half time.

Reports emerged suggesting the injury would be a season-ender, but De Zerbi seems cautiously optimistic that he could return in time for Tottenham’s penultimate match of the season against Chelsea.

"About Solanke, he's improving very quickly. I don't know, for this game, I don't know if he can be available," he said. "We hope for the next game in Stamford Bridge."

He played no part in SW6, though, and now has just one chance remaining if he is to feature again for Tottenham this season.

Potential return date: May 24 vs Everton (H)

Xavi Simons

Xavi Simons was struck down with injury shortly after De Zerbi’s takeover, rupturing his ACL shortly after scoring the winner away at Wolves. He received treatment on the pitch and attempted to play on, but was ultimately forced off.

Spurs later confirmed the injury in a statement, and Simons is now undergoing a lengthy spell of rehabilitation, which will see him miss the World Cup and the opening matches of next season.

Following the diagnosis, Simons wrote on Instagram: “They say life can be cruel and today it feels that way. My season has come to an abrupt end and I’m just trying to process it.

“Honestly, I’m heartbroken. None of it makes sense. All I’ve wanted to do is fight for my team and now the ability to do that has been snatched away from me, along with the World Cup.”

Potential return date: Winter 2026

Cristian Romero

Club captain Cristian Romero saw his season ended in De Zerbi’s first match with Tottenham, suffering a serious knee injury in defeat at Sunderland.

The injury came in a clumsy collision with Antonin Kinsky, and it was later confirmed that he would not return to the pitch this campaign.

It remains to be seen whether he will be able to represent Argentina at this summer’s World Cup.

“I don’t know if there is a chance to play one game, two games, I don’t know. I hope so. But I don’t know,” De Zerbi said.

“But for him, I would like it if he can be available to play in the World Cup, especially for an Argentinian player. They feel the national team more than Italian players or other nations.”

Mohammed Kudus has not played for Tottenham since Tottenham’s 1-1 draw with Sunderland in January, and those 18 minutes will prove to be his last of this season.

He suffered a hamstring injury then, and suffered a setback in his recovery in early April which will leave him sidelined for the remainder of the season.

Spurs revealed in a statement that he may need to undergo surgery, but no decision has yet been taken.

De Zerbi said: “I don’t know [if Kudus will require surgery]. Not spoken with the doctor about the Kudus situation.”

Dejan Kulusevski is yet to appear for Tottenham this season as he recovers from a nebulous knee injury, for which he has undergone multiple surgeries.

The first came in May 2025, and he has not yet returned to first-team training despite regularly sharing videos to his social media of himself rehabbing.

The Swede had set his heart on representing his nation at this summer’s World Cup, but missed out on Graham Potter’s squad when it was announced last week.

After his most recent procedure in late March, Kulusevski said: “It was really positive to undergo this small operation and be able to identify the problem. Now everything should be sorted out.

“It’s just a matter of slowly and surely coming back. I can see the light. It feels better now. I really have a positive feeling about [the] World Cup in two or three months.”

Wilson Odobert

Wilson Odobert’s season was brought to an unceremonious early finish when he ruptured his ACL in February during a 2-1 defeat by Tottenham.

He went under the knife shortly after and is now rehabilitating at Hotspur Way. He is expected to remain sidelined through the latter stages of the year.
