Tottenham Hotspur have initiated contact with Bayer Leverkusen to sign defender Piero Hincapie, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.
The Colombian international is keen on a move away from the BayArena if a suitable offer arrives before the transfer window closes on September 1.
Tottenham previously showed interest in Hincapie earlier this summer, and fresh discussions have now taken place regarding a potential move to London.
Hincapie is understood to have a release clause of around £52 million (€60 million), a figure Spurs are willing to match on an initial loan deal with an obligation to make the switch permanent next summer.
While he is primarily a centre-back, Hincapie can also be deployed as a left-back or a left wing-back and would be a great option for Spurs manager Thomas Frank.
Leverkusen have experienced a mass exodus this summer, with several key players departing, most notably Florian Wirtz.
Despite the club’s reluctance to lose Hincapie, the player’s desire to move to the Premier League and Tottenham’s transfer bid could result in a move materialising.
However, Tottenham’s pursuit faces competition from Premier League rivals Chelsea, who have also expressed interest in the defender due to the absence of long-term absentee Levi Colwill.
Tottenham are expected to have a busy final week of the transfer window after recently missing out on Eberechi Eze, which has left them exploring deals for multiple alternative targets.
They recently had a €70 million offer for Como’s Nico Paz rejected, and remain huge admirers of Manchester City’s Savinho.
