Tottenham Hotspur are interested in a deal to sign Cody Gakpo from Liverpool as the North Londoners accelerate their rebuild under Roberto De Zerbi.

De Zerbi has identified Gakpo as a top target to reinforce his frontline, with Spurs readying an approach for the Netherlands international.

Gakpo has impressed at the World Cup this summer, scoring twice and providing an assist in the Netherlands’ 5-1 win over Sweden on Sunday.

However, his future at Liverpool is in doubt following the club’s recruitment drive this summer. Liverpool have signed Victor Munoz from Osasuna for a €40m fee, with the 22-year-old favouring a role from the left.

The Reds also remain in pursuit of RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande and are expected to return with an improved bid, after an initial €100m offer was rejected. With Rio Ngumoha’s development also a priority, Gakpo’s sale could be sanctioned for a suitable fee.

According to Italian journalist Nicolo Schira, Spurs boss De Zerbi is ready to offer Gakpo a prominent place in his plans, with a five-year contract on offer.

It continues an active summer for Spurs, who have already finalised the signings Jan Paul va Hecke, Marcos Senesi, and former Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson. Spurs have also had an opening offer of around £80m rejected by Newcastle for Sandro Tonali.
