The 17-year-old Arsenal academy prospect appeared set to swap his red-and-white colours for those of the Lilywhites following extensive negotiations, but a dramatic, last-minute intervention from the Tyneside club turned the tables.
Spurs had been confident of sealing the deal after reaching an agreement in principle following Thompson’s decision to leave the Hale End academy.
Having tracked the versatile attacker since his move from West Ham United to Arsenal in 2024, Tottenham’s recruitment team believed they had secured their long-term target to strengthen their Under-18 and Under-21 squads.
Thompson’s tactical flexibility—primarily as a clinical centre-forward but also adept at making direct runs from either flank—made him one of the most sought-after young talents in British football.
However, Newcastle acted decisively to outmanoeuvre their London rivals. Led by sporting director Ross Wilson’s strategy to accumulate elite youth talent, the Magpies offered a superior development pathway and an appealing club structure that quickly won over Thompson’s family and representatives.
Thompson is set to join Newcastle with an impressive youth pedigree, having produced standout performances for Arsenal’s Under-18 side and earned international recognition with England Under-17s.
For Tottenham, losing a London-born talent of such potential to a Premier League top-four rival highlights a vulnerability in their recruitment process, one they will be eager to address in their ongoing pursuit of Mishel Nduka, who has already visited Hotspur Way.
