Sunderland are confident of keeping Robin Roefs despite Tottenham adding the 23-year-old to a summer shortlist and viewing him as a contender to become their number one, according to Football Insider.
Roefs has impressed in his first season on Wearside after arriving from NEC Nijmegen last summer, quickly establishing himself as Régis Le Bris’ first-choice goalkeeper. Interest has built in recent months, with Spurs the latest Premier League side linked.
The report says Sunderland believe this season’s progress and the club’s long-term plan could persuade Roefs to stay. Tottenham’s own situation is uncertain, with Guglielmo Vicario expected to move on, and Roberto De Zerbi’s side are said to be considering alternatives such as Brighton’s Bart Verbruggen and Manchester City’s James Trafford.
It is added that any chance of landing Roefs would likely vanish if Spurs are relegated from the Premier League. Their survival hopes were boosted by a win at Aston Villa last time out, and European football could also be a factor in any pursuit.
Roefs has made 32 Premier League appearances this season with nine clean sheets. Figures cited in the report show a 70.1 per cent save rate, ahead of Vicario’s 62.4 per cent, and more saves per 90 minutes. Liverpool and Manchester City have also been linked, while the Dutchman is set to be in the Netherlands squad for the World Cup this summer.
