Toulouse have rejected a bid from Aston Villa for French centre-back Jaydee Canvot, according to RMC Sports journalist Fabrice Hawkins.
The Athletic’s David Ornstein claimed in July that Villa had made an offer to bring the highly-rated centre-back to Villa Park.
The Ligue 1 club have now responded by rejecting the offer as they want around €20 million, and the Villans are expected to return with an improved bid in the coming days.
Villa manager Unai Emery wants to strengthen at the back, and Canvot has emerged as an option.
The 19-year-old can also play as a holding midfielder, and the Midlands club could utilise his versatility. However, they may initially loan him out.
Villa brought in 19-year-old Turkish defender Yasin Ozcan from Kasimpasa earlier this summer, and have sent him out on loan to Belgian Pro League club Anderlecht.
They have also signed 19-year-old centre-back Modou Keba Cisse from LASK on a pre-contract agreement.
He will spend the season on loan with the Austrian club before joining Villa next summer.
Villa started the 2025-26 campaign with a goalless draw with Newcastle United on Saturday. Ezri Konsa was sent off in the 66th minute.
The 27-year-old England international defender will only miss Villa’s clash against Brentford next weekend as he was sent off for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity.
He will be available for selection when they host Crystal Palace after the trip to London.
However, Emery could be looking to sign another player in the position, as Villa cannot afford to be light defensively.
They picked up four red cards last term, with only Ipswich Town and Arsenal collecting more.
Villa could have secured a top-five finish and qualified for the Champions League had they finished those games with 11 players, and they have to avoid red cards this term.
