Egyptian football's mourning the passing of Mohamed Aboul Naga famously known as Bonga, the Wadi Degla goalkeeper who died on Saturday at the age of 36 following serious illness.

Health Crisis After League End

Bonga was admitted to intensive care shortly after the end of the Egyptian Pro League season. He'd complained of severe abdominal pain, later diagnosed as jaundice and liver enzyme dysfunction.

His condition worsened rapidly and he was preparing for liver transplant surgery but fate intervened before the operation could take place.

Bonga began his career at Kahrabaa Ismailia in 2015 then moved to El Merrikh Port Said before joining Petrojet in 2016 as replacement for Mohamed El Shennawy who'd departed for Al Ahly.

He remained with Petrojet until summer 2024 playing a key role in their promotion push. In 202 he signed for Wadi Degla on free transfer.
