Darrell Clarke has been appointed Tranmere Rovers manager on a two-year deal, with the League Two club coming off a 21st-place finish last season.

The 48-year-old arrives after spells with Salisbury City and Bristol Rovers, where he delivered back-to-back promotions to League One, then took charge of Walsall in May 2019.

Walsall finished 12th in his only full season before he moved to local rivals Port Vale in February 2021. He won the play-offs with Vale in 2022, then managed Cheltenham Town, Barnsley and Bristol Rovers.

Clarke said he was thrilled to join Tranmere, highlighting the club’s history, passionate support and sizeable potential, and that he is eager to get started.

He added that he understands the bond between the club and its fans, and wants a side that works hard, plays with intensity and gives supporters belief at Prenton Park.

Clarke noted the chairman has been open about a major recruitment job, with fewer players under contract than is usual at this stage. He views that as appealing, allowing him to shape a squad that suits his style and preferred characters.
