Transfer looms: Bayern holds out hope for Palhinha!

The clear goal for FC Bayern’s management is to generate revenue. Two new signings totaling more than 100 million euros in transfer fees are already confirmed; now the club needs to make some sales.

There are plenty of candidates. The focus here is particularly on players returning from loan stints. While players like Raphael Guerreiro and Leon Goretzka are no longer part of the roster, their contracts had already expired, so the club is “only” saving on their salaries.

The focus is more on Sacha Boey, Alexander Nübel, Bryan Zaragoza, and Joao Palhinha, who are slated to be sold. The success of these sales will also have implications for Max Eberl’s future. And it’s not easy to position these players prominently on the market.

Palhinha: New Hope for FC Bayern

In the case of Joao Palhinha, the Portuguese midfielder, there had recently been hope in Munich that Tottenham would sign him permanently. But that hope was dashed. The Spurs initially wanted to renegotiate and drive down the fee to around 30 million euros, then set their sights on other players.

Namely, Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali. Both are top-tier midfielders who cost a great deal of money. There’s simply no room left for Palhinha—even though he scored several important goals in the fight against relegation and had many strong performances.

Several media outlets have now reported that the Spurs have clearly ruled out signing the Portuguese player. As things stand, he is expected to report for the start of training camp in Munich.

Still, there is hope. As Sky in England reports, there are increasing signs that the midfielder will return to Sporting. The Portuguese club has been interested in Palhinha for quite some time, but—largely due to its own financial constraints—has had to view the situation from the position of an underdog.

Now that the Spurs are out of the running, Sporting certainly has a chance. For Bayern, however, this means they’ll have to lower their asking price. A transfer in the range of 25–30 million euros is highly unrealistic, not least because of the salary Palhinha commands.
