Nine central midfielders have been ranked for the 2026 summer window, outlining who leading clubs could target. According to NY Times, selections reflect realistic destinations and budgets.
The tiers broadly map to elite, next tier and wealthy middle class. Inclusion does not equal availability, and Tier Three names could still suit top clubs if others are unobtainable.
Tier One features Elliot Anderson, Enzo Fernandez and Adam Wharton. Anderson was a unanimous pick, a ball-winner and forward passer, with a likely fee above £100m. Fernandez is world class but may be effectively unavailable if Chelsea seek to recoup their €121m, while Wharton’s craft has him here and Palace would demand a premium.
Tier Two contains Alex Scott, Angelo Stiller and Kees Smit. Scott blends elegance with bite and sits near Tier One as Bournemouth look to extend him. Stiller has flourished under Sebastian Hoeness at Stuttgart as a bold passer and Germany international, while Smit’s rise is caveated by the Eredivisie jump and his World Cup omission.
Tier Three lists Joao Gomes, Manu Kone and Leon Goretzka. Gomes was among Wolves’ better performers in a relegated side, a combative No 8 with limited passing ambition. Kone has rebuilt at Roma with a stronger defensive edge, and Goretzka, 31, departs Bayern after eight decorated years yet remains a versatile squad option for Germany.
