Trevor Carson has retired due to a knee injury, just over a month after agreeing to join Queen of the South. The 38-year-old picked up the problem during pre-season for the new League One campaign. He had been Nicky Clark’s first signing.
The club said in a statement that he had stepped aside after a tough pre-season left him unable to guarantee fitness for the full campaign, adding that manager Nicky Clark saw it as a major blow, praised his experience and honesty, and welcomed the early decision that gives time to find a replacement.
An eight-times capped Northern Ireland international, Carson began his career at Sunderland and gained senior experience on loan at Chesterfield, Lincoln City and Hull City. He left without a first-team appearance in the summer of 2012, then returned to the North East in 2015 with Hartlepool after a spell at Cheltenham Town.
He helped Pools reach the FA Cup third round in 2016. They were then beaten 2-1 at home by Derby County, whose side included former Sunderland and England striker Darren Bent and Austria international Andi Weimann.
Carson made 63 appearances in two years at Victoria Park, then moved to Motherwell. He remained in Scotland with spells at Dundee United, St Mirren, Ross County and Dundee.
