According to a recent update from SPORT, Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s future has taken a new turn.

The arrival of Joan Garcia from Espanyol has thrown the German goalkeeper’s position into serious doubt, and a summer departure now appears more likely than ever.

However, despite being one of the world’s most recognisable goalkeepers, Ter Stegen does not have a wide range of suitors, primarily due to his high salary demands and advancing age.

Few clubs can afford Ter Stegen’s salary

Barcelona are open to either terminating Ter Stegen’s contract or facilitating a transfer if the right offer comes in. The problem is that very few clubs are in a financial position to take on the German’s sizeable wages.

One of the most obvious fits could be Manchester City, who have seen Ederson’s form dip in recent months.

With Stefan Ortega and Marcus Bettinelli not considered reliable long-term options, Pep Guardiola’s side might be willing to invest in a high-profile replacement. City are one of the few clubs who could afford both the transfer fee and the wages involved.

Meanwhile, Monaco have reportedly enquired about goalkeeping options, with Andre Onana being one target. Ter Stegen is also on their list, but the French club would likely struggle to cover his current salary.

There is interest, but…

Chelsea have also entered the picture, reportedly monitoring the situation. But again, financial constraints and Ter Stegen’s desire to play regular football ahead of the 2026 World Cup could complicate matters.

AC Milan’s interest hinges entirely on what happens with Mike Maignan, while Bayer Leverkusen are said to be exploring goalkeeper options, though nothing concrete has emerged linking them directly to Ter Stegen.

On paper, Saudi Arabia and Galatasaray would have the resources to make an attractive offer, but the German international reportedly wants to stay in Europe, as he aims to remain in contention to be Germany’s No. 1 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Lastly, Ter Stegen could technically stay at Barcelona and compete with Garcia for the starting role, but that would be a huge risk.

With a World Cup on the horizon, a season on the bench could cost him dearly. For now, the market is narrow, and unless one of the big European clubs comes forward with a solid offer, both the player and Barça face a complicated summer.
