Spurs were heavily beaten 5-2 in their first leg Champions League tie against Atlético Madrid at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano.
The North London side did find the net twice through Pedro Porro and Dominic Solanke; however, Julian Alvarez’s strike in between those two finishes pushed the game further away from the Lilywhites.
Igor Tudor’s side conceded three goals inside the opening 15 minutes, and after an embarrassing mistake, substituted goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky off on his UEFA Champions League debut. The result means the Spurs have lost six consecutive games, the most ever in their history.
“It happens very rarely,” said Tudor. “I have been coaching for 15 years, and I never do this. It was necessary to do this to preserve the guy and the team. Incredible situation.
“Before the game, it was the right choice, in the moment we are in, pressure on Vicario. Tony (Kinsky) is a good goalkeeper. It was the right decision. After this, it is easy to say it’s not the right decision.
“I spoke to Tony afterwards – I said he is a good goalkeeper, but unfortunately, this happens in this big game, big mistakes. After that, the start of the game, it was too much for us at that moment, when we are fragile and weak.”
The Spurs boss is yet to win a single fixture in his new dugout since his appointment in February, which begs the question whether he will be employed in North London much longer; however, Tudor is not interested in that topic.
“This is not a topic for me (to talk about). It’s not about my job, but how I can help the team. I am always thinking about that.
“I recognise what we are, which problems we have. In every game, something happens. Sometimes very difficult to explain. I also see the players’ wish to do the right things. We started well, two or three minutes, and I feel we are in the game.
“But when these things happen, in the moment we are in, this happens. The pitch was the same for both teams.”
The 47-year-old expanded on the head clash between Micky Van de Ven and Christian Romero, stating that it doesn’t strengthen their case.
“An example of those moments, it’s incredible. Micky (Van de Ven) is already out of Liverpool with a red card. It looks like everything is against us.”
The man in the hot seat may be feeling the pressure currently, but his next opportunity to turn things around isn’t an easy challenge, as a trip to the current champions, Liverpool, awaits.
