The Eagles were forced into an early substitution when Rasmus Kristensen was taken off injured and replaced by Nathaniel Brown in the tenth minute. That meant Toppmöller had to reshuffle his backline, with Brown taking Arthur Theate’s spot at left-back, and the Belgian shunting Nnamdi Collins from centre-back to right-back. Leverkusen score The home side took the lead when Alejandro Grimaldo’s 25-yard free-kick hit the right-hand post, ricocheted off Michael Zetterer’s back and bounced into the net (10’). Eintracht had to subsequently weather a Leverkusen storm as Nathan Tella (17’), Jarell Quansah (19’) and Patrik Schick (23’) all had chances to add to the scoreline. Opening for Burkardt, Leverkusen penalty Eintracht enjoyed increasingly long spells on the ball as the match wore on but struggled to seriously threaten the home side’s goal. The Eagles’ best chance arrived in the 37th minute when Jean-Matteo Bahoya delivered a teasing cross into the box for Burkardt, who headed over.

Leverkusen doubled their lead in first-half stoppage time, however, with Schick converting from the penalty spot after Robin Koch had brought down Nathan Tella.

Uzun pulls one back Toppmöller’s charges emerged reenergised for the second half and got a foothold in the game in the 52ndminute. After Leverkusen failed to clear a corner, the ball sat up kindly for Can Uzun to volley in from a central position around 15 yards out.

Andrich sent off In the 59th minute, Leverkusen midfielder Robert Andrich was shown his second yellow card of the game for a foul on Ritsu Doan. Eintracht very nearly equalised 120 seconds later when Collins struck the crossbar with a thunderous long-range drive that heralded a long spell of pressure from Toppmöller’s men, who linked up well with their pace and neat interplay. However, they very nearly conceded again in the 85th minute when Leverkusen got forward on the counter, only for Zetterer to produce a fine stop to keep out Axel Tape. Fernandez sees red, Grimaldo decisive The home side were reduced to nine men in stoppage time when Ezequiel Fernandez was also cautioned for a second time (90’+2). Eintracht threw everything forward in search of an equaliser in a hectic finale, but Leverkusen had the final say when Grimaldo curled in an unstoppable free-kick deep into added time (90’+8).
