Manchester City appear to be locked into negotiations with club officials from Turkey over the future of Jadel Katongo, according to new reports.

The latest development fits into a broader pattern seen across this window, with City continuing to assess pathways for a number of their more senior Academy prospects amid a busy January reshuffle.

The club are open to moves that accelerate first-team exposure, particularly for defenders whose immediate opportunities at the Etihad Stadium remain limited given the options usually at Pep Guardiola’s disposal when a fully-fit squad is available.

Jadel Katongo has been viewed as a versatile defensive option, capable of operating primarily at centre-back while also offering flexibility across the back line. However, with competition for minutes intense and the club increasingly prioritising loan pathways, opportunities elsewhere are being actively explored.

That approach has already been evidenced in recent weeks through loan exits and recalls involving Academy and development squad players, with City keen to ensure competitive senior football is secured where possible.

And now, according to the information of journalist Reşat Can Özbudak – as translated and relayed by Sport Witness – Kayserispor want to sign Manchester City’s versatile defender Katongo this month

The Turkish club are said to have started negotiations with City to sign the natural centre-back, although it remains to be seen whether the intention is for a loan or permanent deal, as well as the Premier League side’s stance on talks.

From City’s perspective, any agreement is likely to hinge on sporting guarantees. As seen in comparable cases, City have shown a preference for structures that ensure consistent minutes, often paired with future safeguards should a permanent transfer be discussed.

Kayserispor’s interest could therefore present City with an opportunity to test Katongo in a demanding senior environment, while also assessing his readiness for higher levels of competition.

Looking ahead, negotiations are expected to clarify whether Kayserispor are willing to meet City’s preferred conditions, particularly around playing time. Should talks progress positively, a January move could be concluded before the latter stages of the window.
