Jose Mourinho has joked he told new loan signing Milan Škriniar that the Turkish Super League is ‘fair’, following his infamous remarks about the top-flight’s refereeing decisions.

Speaking ahead of his side’s Europa League match with Lyon, Mourinho revealed how much involvement he had in the deal to bring the Slovakia captain from PSG.

“A little role, I think. The biggest role is the club, the will to do it, the desire to do it, the financial capacity to do it.

“Then the role of the sports director because I think he’s the one who is face-to-face with players, agents and other clubs.”

“My role is to call the player and say how amazing Fernerbachce is, how amazing the Turkish League is, how fair the Turkish League is, and how beautiful Istanbul is. It doesn’t matter if it’s sunny or rainy, and just tell him a nice story.”

Since the turn of the year, Mourinho’s wishes for better officiating have seemingly come true. The Turkish Football Federation has temporarily introduced foreign Video Assistant Referee (VAR) to domestic matches.

However, the former Chelsea and Manchester United manager is not convinced that it has made the league more fair.

“I don’t know”, Mourinho replied. “It was just one round. It’s too early to make conclusions. It’s too early.
