Two men will stand trial in February over an alleged attack on a couple after Olympique Lyonnais v Le Havre on 29 August. According to AFP, the Lyon prosecutor’s office confirmed on Monday that the case will go before the correctional court.

The couple were confronted well after full-time by intoxicated people leaving a bar near the OL stadium in Décines-Charpieu. The woman, a left-wing opposition councillor in Rillieux-la-Pape, wrote on Facebook that they were racially abused then assaulted.

Three men in their thirties, all with criminal records, were arrested on Friday in the Lyon area as part of the inquiry. One was released without charge, the other two will appear on 18 February.

They face counts of group assault resulting in total incapacity to work of more than eight days for the councillor, and not exceeding eight days for her partner.

In a video posted on X on Monday, the Bad Gones, a prominent OL supporters’ group, strongly denied any involvement after the councillor had blamed a group of fans.

The leading hypothesis is a clash between two antagonistic supporter groups, possibly prearranged, involving around 20 people on each side at about 20:45.

Olympique Lyonnais chief executive Michael Gerlinger denounced the incident as appallingly violent.
