The U20 World Cup has always been a major event for football fans across the globe.
This competition has given many players the chance to shine and secure contracts with some of the world’s top clubs.
Here are 4 international legends who emerged thanks to the U20 World Cup.
The world football icon showcased his brilliance during the 1979 FIFA World Youth Championship in Japan. Voted the tournament’s best player, El Pibe de Oro netted six goals in as many matches.
The Argentina captain made his mark at the 2005 World Cup in the Netherlands. He too was crowned the tournament’s best player after scoring six goals and providing two assists in seven games.
Sergio Agüero
The former Albiceleste captain burst onto the scene during the 2007 edition in Canada. In seven matches, he scored six goals and delivered four assists, earning him the Golden Ball as the tournament’s top player.
The French midfielder was one of the standout performers at the 2013 U20 World Cup, held in Turkey. The former Juventus star scored once in six appearances during the tournament.
