The Spanish federation announced a list of 25 regional clubs invited to attend the Spain v Argentina World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Sunday 19 July at no cost. Among sides across Primera RFEF, Segunda RFEF and Tercera RFEF, UD Castellonense landed the big prize.

The Valencian club from Vilanova de Castelló, a town of about 7,000 people, earned historic promotion in May to Segunda RFEF, Spain’s fourth tier. Long-serving secretary Emilio Aviñó, with more than 30 years at the club, will make the trip.

Aviñó said the club were told on Wednesday to register before midday and, with all requirements met, the board asked him to go. He added that flights, match ticket and transport between stadium and airport are covered.

He is due to leave at 7 am on an RFEF charter, checking in at Barajas Terminal 1 by 5 am, and expects a same-day return after the final. He hoped for a Spain win, accepted football will decide and that small details could be decisive.

He also recalled having watched the 2010 final from Canada while travelling, and hoped for the same outcome this time. Club president Miguel Ángel Pla Caldes said a Friday notification brought delight, and, away on holiday in Ibiza, he nominated Aviñó to represent the club.
