UEFA and Liverpool have launched an investigation into the advertising hoarding after Noa Lang suffered a serious right thumb injury during Galatasaray's Champions League exit at Anfield. The winger collided with the pitchside boards late on and was taken off on a stretcher.
Victor Osimhen was withdrawn at half-time after a right arm fracture following a collision with Ibrahima Konate. He was replaced by Leroy Sane at the break due to the risk of breaking his arm. In the closing stages, Lang struck the boards.
The 26-year-old sustained a partial severance of his thumb and was in significant pain as medics, including Liverpool staff, treated him on the pitch. He would undergo an operation in Liverpool and was expected to leave the city shortly after before beginning rehabilitation.
UEFA confirmed that it is examining the incident with the club, focusing on whether the hoarding met Champions League pitchside regulations. The findings could influence ground rules across the competition, particularly around board placement beyond the byline.
Lang has been a key figure since joining on loan from Napoli in January, becoming a regular starter for the Super Lig leaders. After the match, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk played down any blame on the stadium infrastructure, describing it as a serious accident. He spoke to Lang and expressed hope the winger would be back as soon as possible, noting the Netherlands would need him if he joins the national team next week.
