FC Bayern is outraged by the harsh punishment against Luis Díaz and is planning countermeasures. UEFA has banned the Colombian attacking star for three games following his sending off against Paris Saint-Germain – a decision that came as a complete surprise to the Munich club and which they are not prepared to accept. According to information from BILD, the club has already requested the official reasons for the decision in order to take action against the ban.
FC Bayern had actually assumed that Díaz would only have to sit out for one game – namely the upcoming Champions League match at Arsenal on Wednesday. Both coach Vincent Kompany and sporting director Christoph Freund had publicly stated this on Friday morning. Kompany even reacted with a smile when asked how long his attacking player would be missing: „My information is: one game. I would be really disappointed if my information is not correct.“
But that’s exactly what happened. The European Football Association provided the shock moment in the afternoon: a three-match ban for Díaz – a decision that caused considerable displeasure at Säbener Straße. Freund had also previously expressed his conviction that only one match was imminent: „My information is also: one match. But that is still being communicated.“ It is now clear: the communication brought the worst possible result for Bayern.

The club requested the official written justification immediately after the decision was announced and is preparing to lodge an appeal, as reported by BILD. The record champions will only be able to assess whether and with what legal means a legal action could have a chance of success once they have received the detailed arguments from UEFA.
The starting position is complicated, as UEFA is generally strict when it comes to suspensions following sending-offs – especially when it comes to dangerous tackles. Nevertheless, Bayern want to leave no stone unturned, especially as the Champions League is hugely important for Munich this season. The loss of Díaz for three games would severely affect Kompany’s offensive planning.
Kompany had publicly defended Díaz after the PSG game and emphasized that the Colombian did not intentionally injure an opponent. The hope of a moderate ban was therefore high. The fact that UEFA is now taking such harsh action will hit FCB hard.
It remains to be seen what the chances of a successful appeal are, but one thing is clear: the German record champions will fight for their attacking star. And one thing is also clear: this ruling does not suit Bayern at all – and has already set in motion the first major Champions League conflict of the season ahead of the Arsenal game.
