UEFA ‘to demand’ Gianni Infantino resign or face vote of no confidence | OneFootball

UEFA has intensified pressure on Gianni Infantino after FIFA abandoned plans to sell World Cup stakes. The Telegraph reports that Europe’s governing body has urged him to resign and warned he could face a vote of no confidence.

Talk of a premature end to the FIFA president’s mandate grew on Saturday. UEFA is leading the current revolt and is said to have set an ultimatum for the Italo-Swiss official.

Under the FIFA Legal Handbook, an extraordinary congress must be called if one fifth of member associations submit a written request. That threshold is 43 nations and would be easily met, with UEFA’s 55 planning to maintain a united front. Any congress must be held within three months of the request.

A subsequent vote would involve all 211 federations. A simple majority, more than 50% of valid ballots, would be enough to force Infantino out, meaning 106 votes.

UEFA, the AFC and Concacaf have already opposed the stake-sale plan, a combined 143 nations. Even so, there is no guarantee those federations would back his removal if a vote is called. UEFA has already castigated the FIFA leader and said FIFA had lost its confidence, marking an escalation in its challenge.
