"When you think about it, we were lucky," said Uli Hoeness of Vincent Kompany’s appointment at Bayern Munich. "I did not even know him before. Max Eberl had suggested him as a fourth or fifth option."
He was speaking to DAZN Germany.
"He told us, 'You must take him without even having seen him play, because if you do not take him now, he will be at City in two or three years'. So he already trusted Kompany to succeed him in Manchester two years ago."
Bayern were seeking Thomas Tuchel’s successor in summer 2024 and initially looked elsewhere. Xabi Alonso went to Real Madrid, Julian Nagelsmann remained Germany coach and Crystal Palace did not release Oliver Glasner, before the club hired Kompany from Burnley.
In his first season, Kompany won the Bundesliga with Bayern. He then retained the title in 2025-2026 and has extended his contract until 2029.
Bayern face PSG in the Champions League semi-final second leg on Wednesday at 21:00, having lost the first leg 4-5 at the Parc des Princes.
