Germany secured progression to the knockout stages of the World Cup thanks to a 2-1 win over Côte d’Ivoire on Saturday night, with second-half substitute Deniz Undav scoring twice to complete the comeback.
The 29-year-old was understandably delighted after coming off the bench to score for the second World Cup match in a row.
“The most important thing was that we won. After conceding, we stepped it up a gear. We were confident we would score. I knew I would get a ball and had to make use of it. The fact it worked out with the very first chance turned the momentum back in our favour, I think. In transition moments we were a bit lucky a few times. The 2-1 goal then made it perfect,” Undav said in a post-match interview.
“A lot is going well right now. I’m riding the wave and enjoying it. The trust from the team and coaching staff makes it easier. There is no nervousness. It’s just a football match.”
Undav now has three goals and two assists in just 56 minutes across two appearances at the tournament so far.
