The R’s had been in discussions with the 36-year-old to replace the outgoing Marti Cifuentes, who had been placed on gardening leave, but now it appears a move for the Dane has broken down.

QPR endured an inconsistent campaign that resulted in a 15th-placed finish, with Cifuentes electing to step down from his position ahead of their final game of the regular season against Sunderland.

Since the news was confirmed, the Hoops have been attempting to find his successor so clarity can be offered ahead of pre-season, but now the West London outfit are seemingly back to square one after an unexpected change in their search.

It seemed it was only a matter of time before Johannes Hoff Thorup took over the hotseat at Loftus Road, with the Pink Un reporting back in May that the former Norwich coach was in advanced talks to become the new manager of QPR after departing Carrow Road.

But in a twist of events, Danish outlet Tipsbladet have stated Thorup has now rejected the opportunity to take on his second managerial stint in England.

He had reportedly travelled to London for talks, but has decided this particular opportunity isn’t for him and has walked away from the negotiation table.

There had been some slight concern about the length of time that was taken to announce Thorup as the new R’s boss, but it was expected to be only minor formalities that needed addressing.

But now something much more significant has occurred to see the plug pulled, leaving Thorup to assess other options as the new season draws closer.

QPR must have been optimistic that a deal to appoint Johannes Hoff Thorup would be concluded and the club should shift their attention to the upcoming summer transfer window, but now the process will have to start again with other candidates who weren’t originally favoured.

QPR have identified other targets during talks with Thorup, with the former Lyon head coach Pierre Sage linked with the position by French newspaper L'Equipe, while former 1. FC Magdeburg manager Christian Titz, who left the German club after having finished fifth in the 2. Bundesliga at the end of the 2024/25 season has been rumoured to be of interest to QPR by German journalist Florian Plettenburg.

It remains to be seen whether those two managers will be the next points of interest to QPR, who have suffered an untimely setback in their preparations for the upcoming second tier season.
