FC Augsburg's dreams of securing European football for next season went up in a blaze of flames this afternoon in the Berlin sun. A 4-0 defeat to 1.FC Union Berlin of the final day of the campaign all but ended their chances of clinching a famous Conference League spot.
After both teams got to grips with eachother, Union Berlin took the lead in the most bizarre of circumstances. Finn Dahmen and Robin Fellhauer chased a long ball from Karl Klaus, prompting the two Augsburg men to collide allowing Andras Schäfer to feed Ilic for a tap in.
Livan Burcu looked threatening on the break in the next significant attack, however Jeffrey Gouweleewu shut the door. Augsburg were largely toothless until the half-hour when Anton Kade found Marius Wolf on the right, only for his cross to deceive everyone in the box.
Approaching half-time, the Köpenick side doubled their advantage. Similar to their first, Klaus initiated the move with a long ball. A crucial flick from Oliver Burke directed it to Ilic. From there, the Serbian fired low and hard from outside the box to beat Dahmen.
Union required all of nine minutes after the break to go 3-0 up. A short corner worked it's way to Andras Schäfer who thumped the ball into the top right corner, while a frustrated Dahmen seemed to mirror Augsburg's rapidly fading dreams of European football.
With it all going wrong for the Bavarians, a handful of tweaks were necessary as Mads Petersen and Noakhai Banks took over from Wolf and Matsima. The club from the German capital also introduced fresh legs in Josip Juranovic alongside Woo-Yeong Jong.
Kade showed glimmers of his goal-scoring form of late, forcing Klaus to act with his second attempt in as many minutes. Union fans celebrated when they thought they bagged a fourth, however Tom Rothe was involved in a foul which cancelled it out.
Although young Uchenna Ogundu showed glimpses of talent for Augsburg, the icing was well and truly put on the cake by Jeong with minute of normal time remaining. The South Korean tapping in with ease after sitting down the scrambling, helpless Dahmen to complete the rout.
