Union Saint-Gilloise sealed top spot in the Jupiler Pro League’s regular season with a 3-1 win at Saint-Trond on Sunday night, the title to be decided in the play-offs.
It came on the final night when all eight fixtures kicked off together. As reported by L'Équipe, the leaders faced third-placed Saint-Trond in the headline game.
David Hubert’s side, placed under Sébastien Pocognoli’s guidance earlier in the campaign, played on the synthetic surface in Limburg. Besfort Zeneli shone with a goal and two assists. The result sends Union into the play-offs, where the top six meet home and away.
Club Bruges are second after a 4-1 defeat of Malines, three points back. They were recently knocked out by Atlético de Madrid in Champions League play-offs after eliminating OM. Saint-Trond sit third.
La Gantoise, Malines and Anderlecht complete the title play-off field, with Genk only seventh.
At the bottom, Louvain beat Antwerp 1-0 against 10 men to dodge the relegation group. Zulte-Waregem, Cercle Bruges, La Louvière and Dender drop in, despite Zulte-Waregem’s 1-0 over Charleroi.
Points will be halved before the play-offs. With no half-point awarded for odd totals, Club Bruges will trail Union by one. Union would take the title in the event of a final tie.
