Whenever rivals have fluffed their lines and handed Manchester United the chance to close the gap up top, Ruben Amorim’s side have let the opportunity slip.

The Red Devils had the chance to go fifth on Thursday but despite taking the lead early in the second half, the home side failed to hold on thanks to the head coach’s defensive substitutions.

This was the fourth time the 20-time English league champions failed to take advantage of their rivals slipping up.

They failed to beat 10-men Everton, took the lead before eventually fighting back to draw against Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur.

CL qualification in doubt

And according to The Sun, these results have caused alarm within Old Trafford, with INEOS having set Champions League qualification as one of the season aims.

Qualifying for Europe’s elite competition is the only way for the club to fund their overhaul and stay within the realms regulated by PSR.

“Concern is mounting at Manchester United over the club’s potential failure to qualify for the Champions League next season.

“United missed their chance to go level on points with fourth place Chelsea as West Ham snatched a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.

“It marked the fourth time since the beginning of last month United have failed to capitalise on such an opportunity. United desperately need the revenue generated by qualifying for Europe‘s elite competition to support their squad overhaul next summer.

INEOS right to be concerned

“But the Red Devils have secured just one win in their last five Premier League games, despite playing one-match a week before Thursday night’s draw.”

The only reason Amorim is not under further scrutiny is because all the other teams in the top half of the table are as inconsistent as the three-time Champions League winners.

Only 13 league wins in as many months is an abysmal record, not too mention his disregard for the club’s attacking ethos and his disdain for the academy.

A win away at Wolverhampton Wanderers would see United climb up to fifth in the table. But on current form, beating the bottom-dwellers will be no walk in the park.
