Manchester United are close to choosing permanent manager, with Michael Carrick now leading candidate after strong results.

Decision near at Old Trafford

Reports in England say Manchester United are now very close to identifying permanent head coach for first team.

United currently led by Michael Carrick on interim basis until the end of the season following the departure of Ruben Amorim. Under Carrick, the team has produced positive results and climbed to fourth place in the league table.

Big-name options fading away

United initially drew up a long shortlist of candidates but finding top-level coach has proved difficult. According to TEAMtalk, hopes of appointing global name are quickly fading.

Thomas Tuchel has agreed a new two-year contract with the England national team while Carlo Ancelotti is close to signing similar deal with the Brazilian Football Confederation.

Elsewhere Roberto De Zerbi is now strongly linked with Tottenham after their recent managerial change raising doubts over his availability for United.

Concerns over other candidates

Another name on the list, Oliver Glasner has seen his stock fall after poor run with Crystal Palace where the team has recorded just one win in the last 15 match.

Meanwhile Luis Enrique widely seen as one of the best managers in the game, is also close to extending his contract with Paris Saint-Germain.

Carrick’s case grows stronger

With alternatives disappearing, Carrick’s chances have grown sharply. TEAMtalk reports that United’s hierarchy have understanding with the former midfielder that he could be offered a long-term contract if results remain strong.

Carrick currently holds a 75% win rate and club officials are impressed by both the results and his calm approach with players which is seen as clear contrast to the style of Amorim.

His steady leadership has earned support inside Old Trafford making it difficult for decision-makers to overlook him.
