There has been an important update in the Spygate saga.

Southampton supporters have been waiting eagerly to discover the extent of the FA's investigation into manager Tonda Eckert, and now there has been an important update.

The Saints were kicked out of the Championship play-offs after the EFL found the club guilty of spying on Middlesbrough in the build-up to their opening semi-final clash.

Southampton were also found to have spied on Ipswich Town and Oxford United earlier in the campaign, with Eckert playing a central role.

Now, the FA has released a statement, stating that Eckert has been charged with three breaches of FA Rule 3.1 in relation to misconduct between December 2025 and May 2026.

"It’s alleged that the head coach acted in an improper manner and/or brought the game into disrepute by directing and/or authorising the observation of training sessions of Oxford United FC, Ipswich Town FC and Middlesbrough FC ahead of fixtures between these clubs and Southampton FC in December 2025, April 2026 and May 2026 respectively."

It has not taken long for the club to respond to the charges, and it seems they will back their manager as Solak previously stated.

"Tonda and the club will continue to cooperate fully and openly with the FA," a club statement read.

"Our focus remains on preparations for the 2026/27 Championship season. The club remains fully supportive of Tonda and his staff as we work towards our ambition of returning to the Premier League.

"We are unable to comment further while the process remains ongoing, but we will provide an update to supporters as soon as we are in a position to do so."

The Athletic have reported that the worst-case scenario for the German is that he receives a ban, prohibiting him from coaching, although sources close to the club believe this is unlikely.

Furthermore, talkSPORT's Alex Crook has reported that Eckert is not expected to contest the FA charges.

This is certainly a change in tone from Southampton, given that when they were initially accused of spying, they went on the defensive.

Of course, considerable time has passed since then, and the club have had time to reflect on what happened and are finally taking ownership.

Now, the Saints will wait on the nature of Eckert's potential punishment, and although they do not think he will receive a coaching ban, that does not mean that will not happen.

A touchline ban, however, does feel like a realistic punishment, and whatever happens, it is bound to affect the South Coasters' start to the Championship season.
